Wellness is important for anyone, and it’s especially important for people who’ve been through high levels of trauma.
A veteran may or may not be a military person. People who’ve been through police, fire, medical or any other emergency provider may have similar situations. Anyone who’s been raised in a violent family, neighborhood or community may also have similar experiences.
The idea of what will help anyone no matter what they’ve been through is important, because it has to work all the time. When dealing with issues of mild or moderate severity, mistakes will happen and they’re not often fatal.
When dealing with veterans, it’s important to get to the root of the situation quickly, because it only takes one moment to create an irreversible trauma. Special teams of all types are carefully selected beforehand, but everyone has their limits.
It used to be that people had to go through two or three tours of duty and it was enough to impact them for the rest of their life. Now some people might see 7 to 10 deployments and were already severely affected after a few.
Several techniques have become very helpful for dealing with veterans issues, such as biofeedback, meditation and spiritual work.
Even just having another vet to talk to can make a huge difference.
Whatever situation you’re facing, think of your loved ones before doing anything extreme.
